Sample First Paragraph for the PHD in Social Psychology

Born into a tribal community in my native rural India, my understanding of community was very much shaped by the many stories that I listened to as a child. While the stories often carried valuable transgenerational knowledge, they also served to reinforce a patriarchy that brutally subjugates women and girls and punishes those that think and act outside of this rigid and oppressive system. As I grew up, I came to understand that women were segregated in our society and confined to pre-approved social niches seen as justified by natural law. By the time that I became an adolescent, I was on track for womanhood with a rapidly advancing understanding of how many of the stories told in my community unabashedly glorified stereotyping, prejudice, and gender discrimination. This has been an integral part of my trajectory throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies. Most recently, very disturbed at the widespread violence being meted out to transgender people, especially in India, I have completed extensive research work in this area as well. Psychology has been my principal salvation all along and I believe that my professional and academic achievements and experiences make me a solid candidate for the Ph.D. program in Social Psychology at __U.
