A PhD student in Behavioral Science and Internet Communication engages in online collaboration while analyzing complex data and research, surrounded by academic resources and notes.

I am writing to support my transfer from the MLIS Program to the PhD Program in Behavioral Science at the University of ____. Pursuing a PhD in Behavioral Science in your dynamic program at U__ will allow me to achieve my long-term aspirations, which have only recently become fully defined—hence my decision to transfer. Specifically, I aim to research role-playing as a form of interactive group therapy and explore the psychological nuances of online interactions in detail. I am ready to leverage my computer skills to advance research in psychology.

As an enthusiastic fan of Massively Multiplayer Online games (MMOs), I have grown increasingly fascinated by the connections between these games and human psychology, and what they reveal about human nature and our habitual interactions. These interactions are highlighted by the anonymity of cyberspace and the barriers to emotion and moral clarity it presents. I am interested in the escape mechanism offered by adopting an avatar personality and its potential benefits or harms in video game battles, team raids, quests, and other simulated activities. I also wish to explore biological connections, learning all I can about biofeedback and applying this knowledge to discover therapy-biofeedback combinations.

I am extremely happy studying for my Master’s Degree in Library Science at ____ University. I enjoy everything related to information and its use, and I will always keep up with cutting-edge developments in information systems and organization, especially as they apply to research. However, as I have matured over the past few years, I have become increasingly involved in my study of Psychology, particularly regarding its application to computer and information-related possibilities. Enthralled by the potential of new technologies to help us understand human behavior, I am eager for the development of new virtual arenas where behavioral patterns can be analyzed. I am also greatly impressed by your distinguished faculty and the exciting, pioneering research being conducted in the Behavioral Science Program at U__.

A behavioral science PhD candidate analyzes internet communication data from multiple screens, participating in a virtual meeting while surrounded by research materials and notes.

I have great admiration for the inspiring work of Dr. ____ in the field of human avatar interaction, as well as Dr. ____'s research on stress management through creative writing techniques. I firmly believe that my undergraduate minor in English and my writing skills will enable me to excel in this area.

The other reason I wish to transfer from my MLIS program at U__ to your doctoral program in Behavioral Science is financial. I enjoy my current studies and find them relevant to my main goal of leveraging technological advancements for groundbreaking research. Being young and not in a rush, I would likely complete my MLIS degree before pursuing full-time studies in Psychology if not for financial reasons. My grandmother is funding my graduate education and is willing to support only one degree, encouraging me to move directly into your doctoral program.

I aspire to earn a PhD at U__ to dedicate myself to a lifetime of applied research. I am particularly eager to learn how to interpret and enhance the virtual social interactions of children and adolescents with mood and anxiety disorders, as they comprise a significant and vulnerable segment of the global online community.

Thank you for considering my application.

You explain why you are moving from MLIS to Behavioral Science, showing maturity and evolving academic interests. Your interest in MMOs, avatars, online interactions, and biofeedback is distinctive and innovative. It sets you apart from applicants with more traditional psychology interests. Combining computer skills, psychology, and information science demonstrates versatility and readiness for cross-disciplinary research. You reference admiration for specific professors’ work, which shows you’ve researched the program and understand its strengths. You highlight writing skills, curiosity, and enthusiasm for technology, which are valuable in research. You articulate both short-term (Ph.D. training) and long-term goals (applied research on virtual social interactions and therapy applications).
