Letter of Recommendation for PsyD Program

To Whom It May Concern,

I am most happy to write the following in support of the application to graduate school of XXXX XXXX who I could not recommend more highly as an applicant to the PsyD Program at XXXX University. My name is XXXX XXXX and I am a Corporal in the City of XXXX Police Department in California. A Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, Swat Team Leader, and Active Shooter Instructor, in the 20 years that I have spent educating police officers, none have ever impressed me as being more competent and professional than XXXX XXXX. XXXX’s husband, a police officer who was killed in the line of duty a decade ago, was one of my foremost mentors and closest friends who was of instrumental importance to the development of my own career. Since that time, I have worked on and off with XXXX and it has been a great pleasure, especially since I will always feel sad about what happened to her husband and my partner at the time, Paul. The two of us were responding to a situation where three women along with three small children had been taken hostage. Paul and I were standing shoulder to shoulder when a hail of bullets from the perpetrators firearm struck him in the chest and he did not survive.

I feel very strongly that XXXX’s skills and leadership qualities would make her an invaluable addition to the PsyD Program at XXXX University. The noble way in which I saw XXXX rebound from such a terrible tragedy as what happened to her husband speaks to only one of many of her fine qualities. She is most creative and detailed-oriented, with a deep passion for learning and she is always thinking on her feet, ready for any and every situation. XXXX is great at working independently with little supervision. She has proven to be a key player on our instructional team. An excellent writer, she has a special facility for translating technical information into engaging content and curriculum. In addition to her professional qualifications, XXXX has personal qualities that make her well-suited as a candidate for the PsyD program. She naturally has fallen into the role of the “point person” that many of us go to with questions. Her extraordinary ability to analyze problems and outline necessary courses of action has been invaluable to us. She’s not afraid to take risks and often suggests new directions to explore.

Committed to quality, growth, and innovation, XXXX never fails to inspire both her team members and students to strive for the same. In short, XXXX is a person with drive, motivation and vision.  I can attest to her strength of character, compassion for others and great commitment to community service. As the owner of XXXX Instructional Services and parent to three children in the public-school system, XXXX is a very active member of the community, regularly volunteering her time and donating educational resources to support the learning environments of all students in the community. XXXX is also the lead volunteer for the Family Readiness Group for the 143rd Battalion of the U.S. National Guard. She is an embodiment of XXXU’s mission to provide service to others. I look forward to seeing all the good that she will continue to do as a student in the PsyD Program at XXXX University and beyond.

Sincerely,

This letter of recommendation is remarkable for its depth of sincerity, emotional weight, and the unmistakable authority of the person writing it. What makes it especially compelling is that it is not simply an endorsement—it is a testament born out of shared history, profound loss, and years of professional observation. The recommender’s voice carries the gravitas of a seasoned law enforcement leader, someone who has trained countless officers over two decades, yet still singles out this applicant as one of the most exceptional individuals he has ever worked with.

💬 A Narrative Rooted in Integrity and Lived Experience

The letter opens with a strong, unequivocal endorsement, but what follows elevates it far beyond a standard professional reference. The recommender recounts…
