I wish to switch from a clinical track of study in psychology to industrial/organizational. I have invested a great deal of reflection in this move, especially since my academic mentor, a clinical psychologist, stressed the importance of thinking about the issue clearly and considering all available options. I am currently a first-year graduate student at ____ College studying towards a master's degree in clinical psychology. For the reasons outlined below, I would like very much to transfer to your highly esteemed program to continue my studies towards the master's degree in industrial/organizational psychology, which is where my passion lies.

Four people stand together under a speech bubble reading "Workplace Mental Health." A laptop and clipboard are on the table.

The main reason that triggered my decision to change my major is my 10-month experience at a consulting company. It is an educational consulting company, and I worked there as an English teacher. It was my very first time working as a full-time employee and as a member of a large group. Before this experience, I had no sense of what it was like to work as an employee, or even as a member of a large group. Ten months has been enough for me to already have dealt successfully with many issues that commonly arise in an organization. Thus, I am convinced that I am not just a people personal, but also an organization person as well. I am especially passionate about conflict resolution both between co-workers and between an employee and management.

As a psychology major and since then in my free time, I am well-read concerning the negative effects of stress and conflict on one's mental and often also physical health. Distress can hamper one from behaving effectively in a variety of settings, including and in some cases especially, the workplace. Nothing pleases me more than escaping for several hours to engross myself in a book devoted to I/O Psychology, particularly in terms of recruitment and placement, but also mediation and worker motivation.

My central interest is conflict resolution in organizational settings because it strongly affects one’s work performance and one’s mental health. To discover more about organizational psychology, I started out by also doing a lot of reading in human resources and HR consulting. My central professional goal is to develop my skills in fully resolving and preventing conflicts in the workplace and assisting employees to perform more effectively through appropriate human resource management.

My calling in psychology is on the Industrial and Occupational track. I now want to learn organizational psychology systematically, and after a thorough investigation I have concluded that I am the best fit with the curriculum of the MS program at ____ College. I see your program as the most innovative and creative and I am certain that I could thrive on your campus as optimal preparation for making my maximum professional contribution to the building of a prosperous and successful society.
