I am currently a fourth year undergraduate student majoring in psychology. As a dedicated and hard working student, volunteer, and professional, I believe that I possess the perceptual, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills that are fundamental to being successful as a mental health counselor. My capacity for empathy has been deepened by my volunteer work with homeless people. It is my intention, through post-graduate study, to develop and extend my grasp of the literature and practical applications in such a way as to be highly effective at providing sound counsel for individuals and families in the community.
I was born and raised in China, and moved to Canada about five years ago. My ethnic background and subsequent life experiences in Toronto have greatly broadened my world views, helping me to develop greater levels of respect and appreciation for people of many cultures, and the views and traditions that arise from our diverse cultural backgrounds. I feel certain that New York City’s great cultural diversity would provide me with experiences that could assist me enormously to think insightfully about the role of culture in the study of psychological and mental health counseling.
My enthusiasm for the study of psychology was fired at the very first lecture I attended on the subject four years ago and has increased incrementally since. Studying psychology and applying the lessons learnt has been of great assistance in the maturing of my own personality and in the adoption of disciplined and rational thinking. I am, therefore very aware of its potential, when properly applied, to assist others.
I believe that my diverse undergraduate studies and experiences have provided me with a solid theoretical foundation that will enable me to excel at further study towards the doctoral degree. I am especially enthusiastic about the areas of clinical and counseling psychology. I am plessed that counseling psychology is one of the fastest growing areas in applied psychology and can be expected to become increasingly important. I am eager to contribute to its development. My strong desire to pursue a career as a professional counselor is driven by my central, long-term goal of helping people to enhance their emotional well-being.
I consider the Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness graduate program at ____ University to be the educational opportunity that best fits my interests and goals.
Through my studies thus far, I have become familiar with the complex factors that account for human motivation and behavior. I have also developed considerable understanding of several distinct areas of inquiry in psychology: human cognitions, perceptions, social and cultural contexts, developmental life paths and the psychodynamics of the unconscious. I seek to integrate these approaches to achieve as complete a picture as possible of an individual’s behavior and their motivation.
Thank you for considering my application.
