Earning the PsyD Degree in clinical psychology will provide me with the clinical and research experience I need at a graduate level, inspiring and enabling me to establish a distinguished career in psychology. Being accepted into the competitive PsyD program at ____ University would give me the opportunity to utilize my research experience and extensive theoretical background to fulfill my life-long dream of helping individuals suffering from severe mental illnesses. I thrived on research during my master’s degree in clinical psychology program at ____ University. In my PsyD program I also look forward to intensive experiences in clinical practice. Gaining clinical experience is a top priority.
As a Saudi Arabian woman giving her all to establishing a career in clinical psychology, I am concerned by the underrepresentation of Saudi women in Psychology, in the West and at home, this speaks to one of my motivations for earning the doctoral degree. Another of my principal motivations is that Saudi Arabia is in urgent need of clinical psychologists who are highly skilled at arriving at a valid diagnosis and effective treatment. I keenly look forward to engaging with cultural education and awareness campaigns to raise consciousness concerning the importance of caring for our mental health and working to overcome the stigma. I’m deeply passionate about putting my education in the United Kingdom and the United States to work back home helping people in Saudi Arabia to successfully manage their mental illness.
I seek full immersion experience in adult psychopathology, to better understand the etiology and treatments of severe illnesses by utilizing a variety of biopsychosocial models. I look forward to research into genetic predispositions, elevated and minimal risk populations, comorbidities. and the crucial role of the environment, particularly its influence on genes. I look forward to broad exposure to diverse populations and I am highly knowledgeable concerning numerous populations in the UK. I am enthralled, for example, with how ecological factors can contribute to significant differences in symptoms from one population to another. Nowhere is creative research into the study of sustainable ecology more needed than in Saudi Arabia. I look forward to monitoring how ecological deterioration and rising levels of mental illness coincide h for some populations.
At ____ University Dr. ____ ____ served as my master’s thesis director for a qualitative study looking at the experiences of children born to mothers with Schizophrenia. Using semi-structured interviews, I explored their experiences and perceptions of their mothers’ illness and how it affected their personal, social, and occupational functioning. Dr. ____ was very intrigued by the research idea and was later most favorably impressed by the results.

Throughout the second year of my master's program, I interned at the New York State Psychiatric Institute in the department of child and adolescent psychiatry alongside Dr. ____ ____ helping with her study of Puerto Rican youth in the south Bronx. It is a longitudinal study that started in 2002 and continues. The studyt examined the emotional and sexual behaviors of Puerto Rican youths in Puerto Rico and the South Bronx using structured interviews and HIV/STI testing. I initially worked on data collection as a recruiter, but then I was able to get training in interviewing and giving HIV/STI tests, as well as administering computer diagnostic interviews. I also helped with case reviews and data auditing, which helped me to better understand data analysis. This experience was especially empowering because I fell in love with research during the process.
After completing my master's degree and an intensive search, I found my current position at the medical and behavioral health clinic in Long Island., working as a clinical assistant to a psychiatrist. I audit initial psychiatric evaluations, write follow-ups, and initial evaluation notes, schedule appointments, meet patients, and administer screening drug tests. Once a week, the psychiatrist gives me a one-on-one lesson on psychotropic drugs and related diagnoses so that I can develop a stronger grasp of the terminology. This has been a great learning experience with real world exposure to what is happening in the clinical field.
I use my extra time to give back to the community as a volunteer for the Arab American Association in New York as an English teacher for second language speakers and a translator for Arab immigrants who are struggling with their English. The experience has been rewarding and satisfying, revealing skills that I never knew I had, I really enjoy teaching.
I’m very highly motivated and driven to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology and I thank you for considering my application.
